Fresh TOMATOES*

*may be harvested by Florida farmworkers laboring under the following conditions:

sub-poverty wages
Workers are paid virtually the same piece rate (40-50¢ per 32-lb. bucket) as they were in 1978. At this rate, a worker must pick 2.5 TONS of tomatoes to earn Florida minimum wage in a typical 10-hour workday.

denial of fundamental labor rights

Farmworkers in Florida have no right to overtime pay, no health insurance, sick leave, paid vacation or pension, and no right to organize in order to improve these conditions.

modern-day slavery

In the most extreme cases, workers are forced to labor against their will through the use or threat of physical violence.

I saw this yesterday.
A sheriff’s truck carrying inmates overturned on a road I take home from school. Everyone survived, amazingly. So I guess it’s okay for me to say it was pretty awesome.

Jake and kimchi…

whatitsliketodie:

Jake is a gassy little dog to begin with.  Boston Terriers are like that.  Today is one of the worst.  Every so often this wave of rotten cabbage scent makes itself known and I look over and he’s laying there, one eye open, making sure he got me.  I can only compare it to kimchi, for you foodies, who know that kimchi is what Korean people call cabbage that’s been left in crocks underground gathering strength.  They call it fermenting.  I call it rotting.  And it smells bad.  Jake can make a veritable symphony of smells and yet he eats basically the same thing every day.  And he’s just like a person in that when you can hear them, they aren’t that bad.  But when he sneaks one up on you it’s terrible and will ruin your appetite.  Particularly for kimchi.

I was trying to take a nap yesterday afternoon when my dog decided to sit next to me and fart in my face. There was definitely a hint of kimchi in there.

"We should give money where it will do the most good. There is no sound moral reason for favoring those who happen to live within the borders of our own country. Sometimes, just because they are closer to us and living within the same political system, they may be the people we can most effectively help. More often they will not be. If we live in a rich nation like the U.S.A., our money will go much further, and help more people, if we send it to an organization working in developing nations. About a sixth of the world’s population survives on the purchasing power equivalent of less than $US1 per day."
